justgrrrlythings asked: Hey-o, I noticed that you're sober and have mentioned sobriety before. I'm sober too and was wondering if it was a choice of yours or if you've always been sober or what. Basically tell me extremely personal things about yourself thanks
When March 2nd rolls around I will have been 6 months sober.
It was a choice that I made after a summer of heavy drinking/drugging and after seeing the toll all that (in my case) nonsense had taken on me physically, emotionally and financially.
After being sober for a few months and really enjoying it I read “Sober Living for the Revolution” by Gabriel Kuhn. Though it mostly deals with sobriety as “straight edge” - which I personally don’t identify with - I still found a lot in there to relate to. I began to see how sobriety can be a radical life choice and tool for motivating and mobilizing yourself and others. I’ve been better to myself since I stopped drinking: I started doing art again, gained some confidence, found great community and solidarity with other sober and straight-edge folk, moved to Olympia and got a better idea of who I am and what I really want.
I don’t know how long I’ll stay sober, but I don’t really think that matters. As with all my lifestyle choices I think it’s best for me to continue to think about it all the time and constantly evaluate the choice I’ve made. For right now (and for the foreseeable future) I intend on remaining sober.
Sorry this is such a tome! I can’t help it. It’s a really important subject for me and I wanted to do it (at least!) a little justice. I’m always happy to say more though - or engage in dialogue. Thanks for the opportunity to rant!
